I love Halloween, guys. Like, a LOT. And this past Saturday was the annual Pretty In Pink party at The Market. Translation: This super cool 80s cover band takes over the building normally used for the farmer's market for a freaking awesome Halloween dance party.

Detached leather sleeves with laces from hands to neck? Nicely done, lead singer.

This is the crew that we got together this year:
Luigi's fist-pump gets a special shout-out, as well as his moustache. And how cute is the little puppy, Gus?

Close-up of my costume:
Usually. I make my costume, but this year, with the move and all, I caved and bought one. Since the majority of women's costumes are slutty-{insert any costume you can think of}, it didn't take long for me to get frustrated but then I found this giant gorilla hand and the rest is history. It came with an awful pink polyester dress, so I found this leopard print one, and made new straps from the same material so they blended right in. Needless to say, I loved it!

Most people at the Market party have either home-made or incredibly unique pre-made costumes and here are just a few of the cooler ones from this year:

But this one...THIS one was the best:
He was a squirrel and his inflatable tail was taller than him. He also carried around that nut all night. L-O-V-E. (And my pal looks pretty cool, too, of course. Ha!)

Nothing says photo-op like a row of port-a-potties, amiright?

And, it's hard to believe that we've been doing this for five years already (although I missed last year). My pal made this cool collage, with one pic from every year.

Man, am I going to miss all these gals!! This night is always one of my favourites of the year, and I'm so happy that I've been able to have so many great memories of Halloween on the East Side.

Happy trick or treating!

the nail files: i've got my eyes on you (and a giveaway!)

Yay!! It's time for the nail files!!

Hello there, lovelies! Halloween is just around the corner and, frankly, it can't come soon enough because I'm very tired of having to close my eyes and plug my ears while yelling LALALALALA during all of the scary movie trailers. That said, I'm a sucker for a good theme so there was no was I wasn't going to do a Halloween mani. Haha!

Here's what I used:

And here's what I did!
Haha!! Googly eyes are so funny. Err...I mean SCARY, because this is supposed to be a Halloween mani.

I did two coats of Cleopatra, and then two coats of Razzle Me Dazzle Me on the non googly-eye nails. For those, I did two coats of Cleopatra and then used two different sized dotting tools to make the eyes: one large dot of white, followed by a smaller dot of black. I used Seche Vite as a top coat, which took away the latex finish, but I still find that it looks slightly different from a standard black polish.

And if you're thinking to yourself, Gee whiz, I sure wish that I had some dotting tools so I could make some awesome googly eyes, then you're in luck because I'm giving some away!

Not only that, but I'm giving away a WHOLE LOT MORE!

*points while jumping up and down*

1 set of nail art brushes
1 set of dotting tools
1 bottle of Seche Vite Top Coat
1 bottle of Seche Vite Collage Overlay
1 bottle of China Glaze Patent Leather Top Coat
(the shiniest of all the top coats, in my opinion)
1 bottle of China Glaze Razzle Me Dazzle Me
(yes, the same one I used for this week's mani, but from my personal collection, obviously, ha!)
1 bottle of Finger Paints Paper Mache
(the best base white, in my opinion)
10 assorted striping tapes
1 set of China Glaze nail strips
(because sometimes there just isn't time for bottled polish, ha!)

Basically, I put together a little kit that has everything I think is a nail art essential (as well as two sparkle polishes because sparkles make everything better).

The giveaway will be open until midnight on November 1st EST (next Friday), and is only open to residents of North America. Sorry to other peeps, but this is a pretty heavy box to mail.

A few other nail filers have been kind enough to help spread the word, so make sure you check out their links in the rafflecopter form!

So link up your nail files posts this week (for 10 extra entries!!) and if you don't have a post up today, then you have time to get one up for next week to snag the extra entries! After you've checked out what all the nail filers have been up to, scoot down to the rafflecopter form! Good luck! :)

cross-species confusion

Sometime before Christmas, The Remix and I will be moving back to Ontario. We don't have a confirmed date yet, but we know that it's imminent. So, naturally, we've been going moderately insane trying to do all the things that need to be done. Unfortunately, that means that our little fur babies, Pickle and Pepi, have been a tad neglected as of late, which is the very reason this little story happened in the first place.

You see, even under the best circumstances, Pickle is high maintenance. For instance, Pickle is presently sleeping next to me on not one, but two pillows that are on top of the couch because just being on the couch isn't good enough. Anyway, the point is that during the last month, Pickle has essentially been freaking the eff out and all it's done is remind us of the 14-hour drive from Ontario to New Brunswick, which included excessive and constant panting, sharp but soft whining, and a beady-eyed stare of unhappiness that bore through the back of our seats to the point that I swear I could physically feel it. Needless to say, neither The Remix or I are prepared to do that shit again. Ha! So, after careful deliberation, we've decided to fly because then at least Pickle will be losing his mind for a fraction of the time.

But then I wondered if there was such a thing as doggie Valium, because maybe if Pickle was a little floaty, he wouldn't drive us insane he'd be more relaxed. My vet said that doggie Valium would be perfect for Pickle and he would be able to take half a dose that would keep him somewhat mellow for about eight hours, which is more than we need for a flight. Score. And in the meantime, she recommended that Pickle wear a lavender scented collar, as the aromatherapy could help him during our packing process.

So, off to Petsmart I went, in search of lavender scented collars because I am Fur Baby Mother Of The Year, despite Pickle consistently preferring The Remix's company (not that I'm still bitter). Instead of wandering around the store forever, I grabbed the first associate I could find and asked here where the lavender scented dog collars were. She looked puzzled and said she had never heard of lavender-scented collars for dogs, but then raised a finger in the air and triumphantly declared that they had some in the cat section.

Now, in case you don't know, Pickle is a Yorkie and therefore, almost the size of a cat (being that he weighs a respectable seven pounds) so I said that would probably work. After getting the collar, the associate read the package and said that the collar only lasted for 30 days, which, for eight bucks, seemed mighty high but since I'm a sucker nothing's too good for my baby, I said that was fine. Just as I was about to pay for the collar, though, I noticed something on the label.

It was directly underneath the 30-day guarantee, yet the associate didn't seem to think that it was an important feature to mention. Namely, that the collar not only had lavender sewn into the cloth, but also mother cat pheromones.

Apparently, the combination of the pheromones and the lavender make for a relaxed kitty but can you imagine if I put that collar on Pickle and then let him out? How far does the scent travel? Would he attract every kitty in a three-block radius, like the Pied Piper, only with more cats (and less murdering)? And how confused would the cats have been? Uh, I came over here to hang with a surrogate mother, but you are a tiny dog. WHAT SORCERY IS THIS? Also, I'm highly allergic to cats, so if Pickle's feline fan club decided to hold its meetings on my porch, I would drop dead the second I stepped outside (which is why Pickle would be a less-murderous Pied Piper, as there would still be one casualty--me).

I'll admit that I'm no animal expert but I'm pretty sure that wearing pheromones for another species is a level of confusion that is best left unexplored, and despite the associate's unbridled confidence that "nothing like that would happen," and "it should still work fine," I didn't get him the collar.

So now I'm back to dealing with a stressed little Picklepants, but at least I don't have to tunnel through a heaping pile of cats to get to my front door. Err...I guess that's a win, right? Ha!

the nail files: sparkly snow leopard

Yay!! It's time for the nail files!!

No, you're not lost, I just got an extreme makeover, courtesy of Nikki from Delightful Designs! Not only that, but my domain name has been changed as well. Yes, it's safe to say that I'm feeling like a more legit writer with my actual name out there.

*brushes shoulders off*

And, as you can also see, there's a new nail files button. I PROMISE that this will be the last change for a long time. Ha! Oh, and I have no idea why the little text box doesn't have any actual text in it. Hopefully that will be remidied by next week. :)

I really dug the black and white gradient from last week, so I decided to keep the monochromatic vibe going for this week, too. Only this time, I added some sparkle (because, let's be real, sparkles make everything better).

What I used:

The Mani:

When I started thinking about what other black-and-white mani I could do, I looked for inspiration from one of my favourite animals, the snow leopard. However, despite going to the zoo on multiple occasions to see the snow leopards, I never even got a glimpse because they were always sleeping behind a wooden wall at the back of their enclosed area. However, thanks to the internet, I know what they look like, so SCREW YOU SLEEPY TORONTO ZOO SNOW LEOPARDS. I WILL STILL BE INSPIRED BY YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE MORE OF AN ENIGMA THAN A REAL ANIMAL.

Wow...I guess I still haven't quite gotten over that. Haha!

Unexpected childhood trauma flash-back aside, I love how the leopard spots turned out. I ran out of my favourite silver sparkle (OPI's Crown Me Already) and have been mourning the loss but I think that Set in Stones is a pretty good replacement. I did two coats of it on my pointer finger and the coverage was impressive.

Now it's your turn! Link up and show off all your pretty nails!

Oh, and here's a little secret: Next week, I'm doing a REALLY GOOD nail-related giveaway and you'll get extra entries if you have a nail files post to link up. I wanted to figure out a way to give regular nail filers and readers an edge, and think this heads-up is the best way. You're welcome. Ha! So if you've been making the rounds for a while and haven't linked up yet, this gives you some time to get a post together for next week. And for those who have been around for a while, but haven't linked up lately, you also have a week to put a post together. Trust me, if you've ever thought about wanting to try nail art, but don't have the tools and supplies, you're totally going to want to enter. And even if you already have supplies, you can always use more, right? :)

Ooooo! Shiny!

As you can see, after a couple months of hard work (by the fabulous Nikki from Delightful Designs), I have a brand-spanking new blog design! Yay!!

How freaking amazing is my custom header?!?

Answer: VERY!!!

Not only that, but I've decided to crank it up to 11 and change my blog name as well. Well shut the front door! has served me well, but it's kind of hard for people to remember and...well...using my name is just plain easier.

If you're a follower already, nothing will change, as anyone who comes to wellshutthefrontdoor.blogspot.com will be automatically redirected to the shiny new domain address at www.jennieshaw.ca (which has already happened, just look up! Ha!).

So please bear with me for the next few days as I play around with the final touches and edits! And, of course, by "I," I probably mean, "Nikki." Haha!

Handing Out Some Thanks

Arguably, this post could be considered a day late but since today is called Thanksgiving Monday, I’m taking it. Haha!

I often write posts about things I find funny, but today I thought I’d get a bit mushier. Or, as mushy as I get, anyway. Despite having some crappy stuff happen over the last few years, I still have lots to be thankful for. So, I made a little list for all of the internet to see (or just my followers, whatevs. Ha!).

Things I’m Thankful For:

The Remix, who is far away geographically-speaking but ever present in my heart (and in our house with the pile of dirty laundry he left on the floor from the last time he visited. Okay, so I’m not-so-grateful for that ;) ).

See, even when I'm driving him crazy by forcing him to inspect EVERY POSSIBLE CHRISTMAS TREE CHOICE a seller has to offer, he's still smiling (and what a smile it is).

Family and friends, who have supported me throughout the crappy stuff, as well as general life stuff. I am seriously thankful for all of you, especially the ones who make me laugh so hard I feel like I may die (which is just about everyone because that’s how I roll, ha!).

Ain't no party like a moustache party, cause a moustache party don't stop.

My brother, representing the Lollipop Kids after inhaling helium and my Mum, being creepy while wearing our creepy handlebar sunglasses. Just a typical Christmas...

Yup. Pretty much all my peeps like to dress up and pose for vintage-vogue-esque pictures. We're all kinds of awesome.

A proper combination of medication that prevents me from actually dying.

I'm not a fan of Medrol, but sure am glad it's around.

Doctors and nurses who truly care about not only my physical health, but my emotional and mental health as well.

I'm literally doing what the elevator wrap is telling me to. Haha! And yes, my main doctor is the guy with the biggest head (picture-wise, only. He's actually quite modest).

Pickle and Pepi, my two most favourite fur babies, who keep me sane because singing songs to dogs is way less crazy than singing songs to myself. The same also applies for telling knock-knock jokes.

Pepi's on the left and Pickle's on the right.

Twinings Earl Grey Tea, because it really is the best of all the Earl Greys out there and when I tried to switch to a less expensive brand it basically ruined my life.

Soft Pretzels, for getting me through the toughest of writing blocks with their delicious buttery and salty goodness.

Just looking at this picture sends me into a Homer Simpson tailspin. *wipes drool*

Microsoft Spell Check, because I’m a great writer but a not-so-great speller.

My Sweet CPs, who not only encourage me to write, but make my own writing better. Also, they’re hilarious and really smart and it makes me feel awesome that either one of them even wants to work with me in the first place.

Blue hair dye, as it’s as close to being Rainbow Bright that I’m going to get (unless some Sprites want to come and hang out—YOU ARE WELCOME ANY TIME, SPRITES).

Nail polish, because…nail polish.

Special Thanksgiving thanks to The Remix for making me this wicked rack!

And last, but certainly not least—my blogger pals! Since starting, three years ago, I can’t believe the amazing people I’ve met from all over the world! Knowing that I’m not alone, and having a way to really connect to others (some who seem to know me better than people in my “real life”) has truly changed my life for the better.

All right, I think I've done enough of this feeling stuff....It's turkey (leftovers) time!
