Ever have one of those manis that just never looks right so you keep heaping on different glitter until it's dangerous to look at your fingers without sunglasses?

No?

Just me then. Haha!

As you can see, the glitter is a tad out of control but is that really a problem?

Hint: the answer is no. Haha!

On top of two coats of Wild Wisteria, I started with one coat of Glitter All The Way (too mardi-gras-esque)…followed by a coat of Can't Be Tamed (better, but still mildly mardi-gras-esque)…then a coat of Polka.com (too much purple, kind of dulled Can't Be Tamed)…and finally, a coat of Your Present Required (perfection!). I'm sad because this picture doesn't do the shine justice AT ALL, but when I went into the light, my iPhone had a mini-meltdown because the insane glittery-ness made it impossible to focus. Hahaha!

Have an awesome weekend! Especially for you Americans--leftover turkey sandwiches, HORRAY!

I've been waiting for the first snowfall to try China Glaze's There's Snow One Like You because then it would be a happy day instead of one that made me want to curl up in a ball with a bottle of wine and hibernate for the next six months sad.

So, when I saw the first snowflake fall past my window, I went to my nail polish rack and started thinking about possible designs. I've read online that it can be tricky to work with, because of its texture, but because I do what I want, I decided not to heed those warnings. Haha! That makes me sound decidedly more badass than I really am (want proof, click here to see which Lord of the Rings Character I am).

Here's what I used:
Indoor light (no flash)

And here's what I did!
Outdoor light (no flash)

Side Note: Holy crazy-pants do things ever look different in natural light!!

The plain fingers have two coats of Paper Mache and my middle has two coats of Sparkles and Snowflakes, followed by two coats of Set In Stones.

For the pattern, I did two coats of Sparkles and Snowflakes and, when the polish was fully dry, used striping tape for the lines. Overtop, I did two quick coats of There's Snow One Like You and then peeled them off.

Every finger got a coat of quick dry top coat as well.

The extra-awesome thing is that There's Snow One Like You smells like snow-in-a-can! So funny! And at the end of the day, I didn't find it hard to work with. The texture is really cool, and I'm not usually one for textured polish, so that's saying something. I love that there are sparkles as well as hexagonal glitter. It's definitely a polish that I'll be using A LOT OF this holiday season! It's just so freaking fun!!

Happy Weekend, everyone! :)

lord of the rings personality quiz (complete at your own risk)

Mondays kind of suck so here's a fun thing to put a smile on your face, if you like the Lord of the Rings, that is. One of my good pals, and CP, Gina, had this personality quiz, which uses the results of a Jung personality test to figure out which character you are.

Fun, right?

Well, I thought it would be, until I got my result…

Bilbo Baggins.

Bilbo? For reals, personality quiz? FOR REALS?! Look, I'm not saying that Bilbo's the worst LOTR character but there are certainly more interesting ones. You know, like royals and fighters and super badass females who shoot arrows and cast spells and do all kinds of awesome stuff.

So, because something clearly went awry with my results, I took it the test again and REALLY considered my answers. And you know what? There were actually a few answers that, on my second try, I GENUINELY answered differently. And when I got to the end, I was satisfied that I had *cough*reconsidered*cough* enough questions to classify me as Arwen, Galadriel, or maybe even Gandalf. Brimming with confidence, I pressed the submit button and got…

Bilbo Freaking Baggins.

image

So yeah, I may not have gotten the character who I think I'm most like, but it's still pretty cool so I thought I'd pass it along.

Click here to take the quiz and then let me know who you are! Hobbit-High-Five for any other Bilbos out there. Haha!

the nail files: kate spade tribute

In case you don't know, I'm a total kate spade fangirl. I have far too many bags, accessories, and even a few pieces of clothing and you can bet your bottom dollar that I stalk the sale section like a fiend. Haha! But recently, I've been obsessed with a new pattern of theirs so I decided to do a little tribute becausewellI can't afford to actually buy anything with the pattern. Haha!! I posted a pic on my Instagram account but I thought I'd share it for the nail files, too, because I love it so much!

What I used:

The mani:

The dots are overlapped in the pattern, so that's what I did with my feature nails. It took longer because I had to alternate colours instead of doing one colour, letting it dry, and then adding another, but it was the only way to get the legit look. I used a larger dotting tool for the bottom (and top) and then a smaller one to fade out the dots. Wohoo for gorgeous dresses that inspire pretty manis! Haha!

Can't wait to see what you're all rocking this week!

mad props for hakim optical

It's been a very long time since I've given out a bag of mad props, but that's just because I've been insanely busy (which you can tell by the lack of posts, as of late), but this one has been a long time coming.

I've been wearing glasses for the better part of seven years and it's safe to say that they're now part of my look.

It took me a very long time to find glasses that suited my face but eventually, I discovered the Derek Cardigan brand of glasses from Clearly Contacts and fell in love with their vintage vibe (and their cuteness. I mean, just look how cute I am! Haha). The only problem is that the lenses they come with are basically garbage--plastic, actually, if you can believe it or not. So, I've gotten into the habit of replacing the lenses with ones made of actual glass and after going around to all the opticians in Fredericton (because that's just how I roll) I discovered that Hakim Optical had the best prices, which made them my go-to place for quality lenses.

Not only that, but the majority of the time, my lenses are ready in less than 24-hours. Sometimes, even on the same day, which is amazing because their primary competition sends them out for like, a week! Yeah, it makes no sense to me either because, you know, I need my glasses to see and not having them for that long is complete and utter insanity. But just when I thought that Hakim Optical couldn't get any better, they did!!

You see, much earlier in the summer, my beloved Derek Cardigan, no-longer-available frames, broke.

BROKE!

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this was one of the worst days of my life.

Yes, I have many pairs of glasses but these ones are my everyday ones and the mere thought that I'd never be able to wear them again was almost enough to make me run to my doctor's office for a valium prescription (I kid, I kid…I already have access to ativan. ;) ). I emailed Clearly Contacts to see if they did repairs, but they said no!

This was me….                                and this was Clearly Contacts.

After I recovered from completely losing my mind because who the heck sells glasses but doesn't repair them (??!!!), I decided to take a gamble and pop into Hakim to see if they'd be able to help. I didn't have high hopes because I didn't buy the frames there, but lo and behold, they said they could! Or, specifically, Ben said that he could…once he went home and got his soldering gun, that is (which, by the way, was hilarious because he literally picked up his keys and left through the side door). Less than a day later, I got the call that he had fixed them!!

Everything was again right in the world and I went on living my life and sporting my awesome, signature frames. But then, just a week ago, the other side broke!

Mashable.com: Yahoo Board Approves Tumblr Acquisition

Naturally, I practically annihilated the speed barrier as I made my way back to Hakim (not really), where the very lovely Lori took my poor frames and said that, although Ben was out, he would be back sometime soon and would call me if the glasses could be fixed.

Could be fixed? Oh the horror.

The next few hours were tense, akin to waiting for a verdict from a sequestered jury, and I jumped every time my phone rang, hoping to hear good news. Finally, the following morning, I got the call. Ben had done the impossible AGAIN and fixed my glasses!

So, without further adieu, I hereby award Hakim Optical in Fredericton, NB with a massive bag of mad props for being the most awesome optical store ever.

If you EVER need glasses or an eye exam, and you live in Fredericton (or the surrounding area) let me save you some time running around and JUST GO TO HAKIM! Lori, Bill, and Ben are super nice and helpful, and they always greet customers with a smile. Their prices are phenomenal in comparison to others, and they're even willing to deal with pseudo-hysterical customers who barge into their store, cradling broken glasses in their hands like a baby turtle. So if they can handle me, then I'm pretty confident they'll be able to help you too. Haha!

Thanks again, Hakim!

It's Holiday Nail Polish Collection Time and I could NOT be more excited about it! Haha!! I picked up a few new bottles the other day (Sally's had buy two, get one free!!) and China Glaze's Your Present Required caught my eye the second I walked in. Mostly because it's just so darn pretty!!

What I used:
Sorry about the unfocused-ness here. I accidentally deleted the "good" one and then was too lazy busy to take another.

 The Mani:

This mani was pretty easy: two coats of everything! Haha!

I really loooooooooooooove this sparkle, guys. Like, a lot. A WHOLE LOT. To the point that I've already thought about buying another bottle because it's a limited edition. But then, I was picking up a few things from Walmart and I saw this!!

My first real-life dupe!!

Yes, my ring finger has a different base coat. I tried it first with China Glaze Flying Dragon but I wasn't so much a fan. I MUCH prefer the white. Haha!

China Glaze, Your Present Required - $5.95

Hard Candy, party central - $3.47

That's a crazy different price!! CRAZY DIFFERENT! Being a proud recessionista, I nearly died because it is legit the exact same polish. Seriously. You'd never be able to tell the difference.

So there you go! If you love Your Present Required but haven't bought it yet, there's a much cheaper alternative out there! Yay!

Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

I know that it's November 1st, but I still thought I'd share the mani I did to match my Halloween costume from last Saturday.

Here's what I used for my matching mani:

And here's what I did!

For the gradient, I started with one coat of Cleopatra, and then two coats with a sponge with both Cleopatra and Felicity. Click here to watch my gradient tutorial! When they were dry, I added a coat of Paris (from Julep, not pictured because I forgot, whoops) to the tips for some sparkle!

For the leopard, I did two coats of Felicity, and then randomly put blobs of I'm Not Lion with a dotting tool. When that was dry, I went around the edges of the sparkle with Cleopatra (using a smaller dotting tool).

And speaking of dotting tools, have you entered my awesome nail art essential giveaway? Well, after you see what the other nail filers are sharing for the week, scroll down and enter! The giveaway is open until midnight tonight (EST)! Good luck!
